A change in seasons is something everyone looks forward to, the rains bring respite from the dampness and the summers bring relief from the uncomfortable cold. Summer is such a pleasant and beautiful season to head out and have fun, but the strong sun and intense heat don’t allow anyone to enjoy this season to the fullest. And this goes specifically for the seniors. If seniors don’t take proper care of themselves, the high temperatures could cause serious health concerns. Here are a few ways seniors can prep for the oncoming summers and stay safe.
How Seniors Can Prepare for the Oncoming Summers
- Stay Hydrated: Hydration is key when it comes to staying fit in summer. The lack of water coupled with the intense heat can cause blackouts that couple further lead to injuries due to falls.
- Stay Indoors: During this season it is vital seniors plan their day well. Plan and finish errands before 10 am. Go for your walks before 10 am or after 5 pm, as between this time the sun is harsh and can cause damage to the skin, lead to heat strokes, and may even require hospitalisation should the conditions worsen.
- Wear appropriate clothing: While most summer days start off a little chilly, you may want to alter your clothes to suit the temperature during the day. Wearing pure cotton loose clothes preferably in light colours is most recommended.
- Wear sunglasses and hats: Keep a pair of sunglasses and caps on you at all times, during the day. The sun is especially harsh during summer and can cause damage to the eyes. If you absolutely have to step out, ensure that you are protecting your eyes from the harsh UV rays.
- Eat smaller meals: Eating heavy meals is a big no-no for seniors during the day. Eat smaller but nutritious meals, pair it with fruits and vegetables that are high in water – summer fruits like watermelons, cucumbers, grapes and vegetables like cucumbers should be included in your meals.
- Take note of your exhaustion: If you feel exhausted, take a note of it. Ensure that you are mindful of the activities that you undertook during the day that could have possibly led to it. Signs of exhaustion include anything from feeling tired to nausea, fainting, fevers etc.
- Speak to your doctor: A lot of medications that are prescribed for health conditions for seniors impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Speak to your doctors about the potential effects of the medications and ways to avoid it.
- Plan indoor activities: Of course summers are nothing to be afraid of, but just like any other season, there are a list of do’s and don’t that are kept in mind. During summers, indulge in fun indoor activities like art & craft, play bingo or maybe read a book. Join a library, solve a jigsaw puzzle. These activities will keep you entertained and also boost your dexterity.
Follow these ways and prep for the oncoming summer season. However, if seniors feel extreme discomfort or are facing any issue like excessive sweating, please reach out to your doctor immediately.
